Now that more than half of the states have cast their presidential primary votes, it may be a good time to take a critical look at the election system in America and assess some of its flaws.
The recent primary election has brought to my attention what seems like an inconsistancy with the spirit of elections. How much sense does it make to have the candidates basically already chosen before half of the country has cast their vote? A far better way to run these pre-election elections would be for the entire country to set aside one week where every state casts their votes, then after that week, it is known who will stay and who will go, and the rest of the time can actually be spent on (gasp) real substantive debate between the remaining choices. Otherwise running for office can only be accomplished by people who either already have name recognition (*cough* Clinton, McCain *cough*) and those with huge personal fortunes to fund a lengthy expensive run with (*cough* Romney *cough*).
I feel the need to emphasize a point that seems to elude some voters, voting is NOT a popularity contest. This isn't choosing a king and queen for prom, this is our only real method of keeping our governing bodies under the control of 'we the people'. I say our only real method, because I'm not convinced that the majority of our representatives (at least the current bunch, and the past few) have any of our interests at heart. It is far more likely that the only motivating factors that really influence how our elected officials decide to vote on various issues, are the vast amounts of money and pressure that are heaped on them by powerful corporate interests.
I'm reminded of a quote by Plato (paraphrased, if you know the exact quote, please post a comment) :
In Democracy, we make the false assumption that those who are most skilled at gaining votes are also those who are best suited to govern.
People need to start thinking about voting for the person whose ideology most closely matches their own. It drives me mad to hear people talk about how they are planning on voting for candidate X because that way candidate Y won't win, or they don't want candidate Y to win, so they vote for the candidate's opponent. It is also frustrating to hear people talk about 'wasted votes', when in reality, any vote that is cast for a candidate whose platform appeals to the voter is a perfectly valid vote.
I've heard so many people rush to criticize Ralph Nader for his cadidacy in the 2000 election, and again for his current bid for president. While I can understand (and somewhat sympathize) with the arguments for that position, who is truly to blame for the results of the 2000 election? Mr. Nader, who was (and is) attempting to break the stranglehold that the two main parties have had on American politics for... well... essentially since forever? Or the American voting public, who casually dismiss third party candidates because "they can't possibly win, so why vote for them"?
The only way we'll truly get 'change' in American politics is by getting the two entrenched parties out of the majority, and bringing in fresh blood. Or perhaps, voting our conscience, not for the lesser of two evils... Even if 'your' candidate has approximately 0.001% chance of gaining office, vote for them anyways, because you know for a fact that they represent your opinions, if everyone did this, that 0.001% would increase substantially and perhaps we would be lucky enough to actually make a difference in the way this country is run!
To address the excuse that "they can't possibly win, so why vote?": When your social or economic position is precarious, or when you truly feel your rights are in danger, strategic voting makes more sense than following your conscience.
As a woman, would I cast a third party vote when my vote for a mainstream candidate can ensure that I don't lose my reproductive rights?
I think there are some hot topics that people feel so strongly about, and our nation is so divided about, people start to care less about their own integrity. When voting becomes less based on these few areas, and when voters become more educated about a political systems that strives to elude them, there will be a chance for real choice.
I feel that strategic voting is only playing into this game they have us in. We should be trying to break out of the game and effect real change. The way to do that? Start breaking the rules!
