In video games, especially massively multiplayer online(mmo) video games, we experience a virtual reality. A virtual reality is a reality that while being completely unreal feels very real to us at the time we are playing a video game.
We have a similar experience when we read or watch a video, however when we play video games we have control over the series of events that we imagine to be taking place.
In mmo video games we participate with many other people who are sharing in what I call speculative virtual reality.
To explain, we are all supposing that there is an immense battle taking place in mmo games that are about fighting and wars. There really isn't a battle taking place and I really did not just fire a rocket at your face. Let's suppose however that I did just fire a rocket at your face; what would that look like? What sort of result would it have. Well lets suppose you had an energry shield around you that could absorb a certain percentage of the explosive force. We of cours rely on computers to tell us what would happen, what it would look like and what effects it would have. We get a visual representation on our screens that is generated by the computers.
When we participate in this experience we feel that the situation is very real. We will move our virtual selves out of the way of enemy fire and respond by trying to kill the enemy.
None of this is happening in reality and yet it in real time we get feedback and we give feedback. Our minds are immersed in virtual reality. The computers aid us in drawing the reality and crunching the numbers. We are merely concerned with the what if. If I input a certain value what will be the result? Its all based on speculation.
One thing that I find very interesting about games like Team Fortress 2 is that you can observe a match taking place.
This is where you can really get an appreciation of how awesome it is that serious battles take place that people are really concerned about and yet you can point to no place in the physical realm where this is happening. The only place it is happening is in some sort of common field of data shared by many human minds and the computers they are linked to through interface. I call this field or realm speculative virtual reality. What is the significance of this speculative virtual reality? That is a question I leave to the thinklike community.

I fully understand what you mean, and for me, I find significance in the fact that as I play the lines of reality are totally blurred during this event. I think that it's a logical evolution of Gaming, and our perception of it.

I think we are going through an evolution of thought and perception. In the future I think virtual situations will become more and more significant perhaps even as much so as actual situations. We will naturally begin to regard virtual reality to be as significant as actual reality. Its as exciting as it is scary.
