The deal, brokered by the Federal Reserve last month, to sell 80+ year old investment company, Bear Stearns, to JP Morgan for an absurd $2 / share (when the value of their New York headquarters is easily over $1 billion [ed. JP Morgan was thoughtful enough to raise their bid to $10 / share, recently]) gives me the uncomfortable feeling that the Federal Reserve is beginning to take steps to move beyond their (already questionable) congressional mandate.
I wonder if Ron Paul's increasingly loud calls to dismantle the Fed were starting to worry some of their board members a little. Maybe there was a growing fear that the public might start wondering what the hell this quiet giant is actually doing, and whether the actions of the Fed are a boon or a burden to America's economic wellbeing.
Perhaps we might even go so far as to say that the Federal Reserve was a bad idea in the first place, and that, taking a lesson from history, fiat currency(that is, currency backed ONLY by faith in its issuers, as opposed to having currency value pegged to a tangible substance, like gold or silver) does not have all that great of a track record. Quite simply, I don't believe that it is sustainable.
While fiat currency provides for an effective means of economic growth, over time inflation is extremely difficult to avoid. The system itself essentially implies inflation, especially when in the hands of unscrupulous political leaders who use absurd gimmicks like $150+ billion tax refund package (that wears a bright shiny sash with the words 'economic stimulus' printed in big letters across the front) during a time that the country is in many trillions of dollars of debt (at least one trillion of which is likely due to the 'Stupid War'(tm) in Iraq).
So the real question becomes, can the populace really trust anyone in government to manage things properly? We've had essentially the same management style for the past 100 years, which is how we made it to the lousy spot we are in now.
Don't misunderstand me, I think that there have been some pretty spectacular successes in American history! I just don't think that we've been much more than mediocre, overall, for the past 30+ years, and that's being somewhat generous.
We should be asking what the Federal Reserve promises and what it actually delivers. Panics haven't gone away and we've even invented new terms for economic downturns: "great depression," "stagflation," "irrational exuberance."
The federal reserve seems to end up as the government subsidy of first resort. Consider the federal reserve history and history of banking regulation / subsidy. Would anyone be surprised to hear that JP Morgan bank got $25 million in public funds to end the panic of 1907? The Fed's online documents even suggest Morgan started the panic to put his competition under water.
These days we don't have to debate whether or not to pump the few connected banks full of billions. The Fed skips that whole Congress mess and the voters should just open their wallets and nod. Or so they tell us.

I was listening to NPR this morning, and they had an interview with a former employee of Bear Stearns whose job it was to dig into the very loans that caused all these problems to see if they were justified, and 75% of the (essentially fraudulent) loans that she shelved were ok'd by her superiors, because hell, if no one bothers looking, they could unload shitty loans and make good money off their sale.
With this article, I was questioning whether it is within the mandate of the Federal Reserve to get involved in this sort of thing. Or if maybe it would be 'better' to let the company implode and maybe other companies would learn a lesson to not be so blindly profit-hungry that they ignore safe business practices.
