I recently had the pleasure of taking in the captivating film, The Last King of Scotland. This film is an adaptation of the novel by the same name authored by Giles Foden. While I've never read the book, the research I've done indicates that Peter Morgan and Jeremy Brock's screenplay is fairly accurate to Foden's novel. After watching the film I was immediately inspired to look into the historical accuracy of its plot. As the film claims it is based on factual events. However, these factual events merely serve as the background to the story of the film's protaganist, Dr. Nicholas Garrigan. Still the background of the story is quite compelling. And the drama of the main character is a beautiful fictional thread woven through historical fact.
I'd like to elaborate so much more on the plot of this film. I will not do so, however, because If you have the same fortune as myself in seeing it without any knowledge of the setting it is a truly exciting discovery in cinema. I downloaded The Last King of Scotland from thepiratebay.org as a torrent file without having any idea what it was about, who was in it or what its setting was. I believe this ignorance about the film greatly enhanced the experience of watching it.
What I will reveal about the film is that explores some very interesting and poignant themes and struggles. Dr. Garrigan in his early twenties leaves home on an optimistic adventure and encounters an amazing level of significance and power in his environment. He's a success but he's been seduced by its rewards and he becomes blind to the ugliness of what he's participating in. The ugliness wholly represented within the character portayed by actor Forest Whitaker; a character who is just as fascinating as Dr. Garrigan potrayed by lesser known James McAvoy. McAvoy and Whitaker have a physician and patient relationship that morphs into a position of great power for McAvoy. Eventually McAvoy's adventure turns into a struggle for survival and the ending presents many moral challenges, but I can not say that I would have acted any differently than James McAvoy's Dr. Garrigan.
This film was an enlightening and educational experience for me. It gave an obscure piece of history an exciting story based just enough in reality to inspire me to research what really happened. To know that this film's setting is based in historical fact gives an already compelling plot depth which one of equal brilliance would not otherwise have. I give The Last King of Scotland 4 out of 5 stars.

Mortel's Sheepskin Factory started to produce line of "apache ugh boots" in the 1950's. In the 1960s the ugg boots became popular among the Australian surfers community. The surfers would put on the sheepskin footwear to keep their fee warm after riding the waves. They would saw sheepskin hides without even putting hard soles at the bottom. The shoes did not look very attractive, they were somewhat ugly, which might have given them the name ugg boots. The ugg classic short also became popular with people of Australia, who would often wear them around the house during the winters.
